Virtue

Bible Readings: 2 Peter 1v5-8; Proverbs 31v10-31; Ruth chapters 1-4

Growing in Grace

As the result of Faith in the finished work of Christ:

  1. Our sins are purged (cleansed) (2 Peter 1v9; cp 1 John 1v7+9)

  2. We have a new nature (2 Peter 1v4; cp 2 Corinthians 5v17)

  3. Heaven awaits us (2 Peter 1v11; cp John 14v1-3)

However, we are NOT to be content with that. We must grow in grace - to be more and more like the Lord Jesus every day.

2 Peter 1v5-8 tells us what to add to our faith, so that we will have a Christ-like character.

 

"Add to your faith virtue"

virtue of Ruth

The only person in scripture actually called virtuous is Ruth (Ruth 3v11).

Read the whole book of Ruth to get the full story but notice:

  • Ruth was clave to Naomi and chose the true God as her God (1v14-18)

  • Ruth was faithful to Naomi despite the hardship (1v16-22) and she could be trusted

  • Ruth asked to go to work and worked willingly (2v1-17)

  • Ruth gave her gleanings to Naomi (2v17-18, 23). She was not selfish

  • Ruth showed wisdom by obeying Naomi and asking Boaz to be her kinsman redeemer (3v1-18)

  • Boaz recognised her kindness (3v10)

  • All the city knew that Ruth was a virtuous woman (3v11)

  • Ruth loved Naomi and was better than 7 sons to her (4v15)

  • Other people praised Ruth. She was not boastful

What is Virtue?

  • Virtue is moral excellence, uprightness, goodness

  • Very simply it is strength to do that which is right

Remember God has called us to virtue, so we ought to possess it (2 Peter 1v3).

Also, we ought to think about virtuous things (Philippians 4v8)

 

A Person who Possesses Virtue

Proverbs 31v10-31 describes a virtuous woman. Her price far exceeds rubies.

Notice that a person who truly possesses virtue:

  • Fears the Lord (v30)

  • Can be trusted (v11)

  • Works willing and is not idle (v13+27)

  • Gives to the needy (v20)

  • Is wise (v26)

  • Is kind (v26)

  • Others will praise them (v28). They will not need to boast or praise themselves.
